Without the Moon

During my observations this week I questioned what would happen if the moon vanished. According to Larry O' Halon's article "What if the Moon Disappeared," he says "... there would be none of its mass left to tug gravitationally on the earth. One of the effects would be that we could throw out tide tables for good...The greatest concern would be in the long term, regarding the Earth's wobbling spin axis... the wobble causes truth north to not always point at polaris... Earth might wobble so much thath seasons would become inhospitably extreme and Earth would be much less stable and inhabitable planet." People don't realize how much the Earth needs the moon. Before this project I was one of those people that really didn't notice the impact the moon had. Each day that I do this project I learn more and more. I realize its necessity and relationship with not only the earth but us as humans. With everything I learned I appreciate it's beauty and power.

  1. Very interesting. What are tide tables? Why is it so critical for the earth to have a moon? I can tell you did some research on this. I have another question. Why do some planets have more moons than earth? I'm really fascinated by the moon and how it works. Nice blog.
