Time Change

Due to the time change I have had my observations more earlier, from when the sun goes down to when the moon rises. I've noticed a change in the sky, usually the sky is clear, no clouds insight, and typical blue sky but lately there has been a lot of clouds in the sky and the color hasn't been so typical.
I decided to research why we have daylight savings and all I came up with was that time change occurred one day when Ben Franklin was in Paris and realized that the sun "rose far earlier than he usually did"  so he came up with the idea of time change to benefit and save money (Handwerk). I also learned that not a lot states do daylight savings such as Arizona and Hawaii ( Handwerk).
Many people oppose the idea of time change they even have started to try to make bills to stop it but the way I see it the only thing changing is the time the sun goes up and goes down (Handwerk). I understand that there are some people that hate change but its not that bad. Change can actually be quite good for you. For example, the sky has changed but it is a beautiful change that doesn't have to be looked down upon.

Tilted Trees

During my observations this week, I noticed many trees in my neighborhood are tilted . The tilted trees are still filled with life. I remember hearing that plants usually grow towards the sun so, I just thought that's what trees did, until I decided to research.
Tilted trees are usually referred to as "Drunken Trees", the cause of "Drunken Trees" is erosion. Erosion occurs when climate changes and causes the ground to "buckle and sink" making the tree slide to a extreme angle. The trees usually deal with the "stress" and keep growing or they "drown" from rising water tables ("Drunken Trees: Dramatic Signs of Climate Change").
Knowing that this is bad for the trees in my neighborhood makes me sad. I've grown up seeing these trees slowly go through their cycles each season and year. Just knowing there might be a chance that these trees will go away is pretty sad. I don't know if there is a way to make them better so all I could do is watch them wither away or hope that they'll overcome it.

Albert Our Fallen Hero

Shoot for the moon, during my cousin's graduation from Reno High, one of the valedictorians gave a motivating speech about Albert, one of six monkeys sent to the moon. His speech compared Albert's courage and accomplishment to the graduates motivations and accomplishments.

Albert's sacrifice gave me the inspiration for this blog. He was one of six rhesus monkeys who "perished on unsuccessful attempts" to the moon ("Famous Monkeys Through History").  All six monkeys were named Albert. All the monkeys were sent to moon, some died on impact, while others died during the flight before the reached the moon ("A Brief History of Animals in Space"). They died not really knowing what the moon was .

It pains me to know that the way we discovered the moon was by sacrificing (basically, leading them to their death) animals. Monkeys like humans do feel, hear, see, talk, and smell as explain in the article Clever Monkeys "The life of a monkey is full of ups and downs. Like us, monkeys form strong friendships and bitter rivalries. They fight for each other and take care of one another. And the leader of a monkey troop, when deposed, will even exhibit signs of depression." I understand that to make discoveries and advance in our world today we must do what we have to but sending off animals such as these monkeys to their death can not be right.

Albert and the rest of the animals we have used for our own discoveries are truly heroes. No one can take credit for what they endure and experienced.

The Crows

When people think of beautiful and interesting birds people usually think of sparrows, blue jays or mocking birds but I don't think anyone thinks of crows. When people think of crows they usually associate them with bad omens, or pests but I recently learned the beauty of crows.

On Tuesday, during my observations, I witness crows migrating, it was so shocking to see them migrating because I never knew crows migrated. It really made me think of what else do I not know about crows. I decided to do some research and found an article called "6 Terrifying Ways Crows Are Way Smarter Than You Think" and it says "On the other hand, every last one of them very likely remembers you as the weird human who kept staring at them. We know this, because researchers in Seattle performed an experiment with some crows around their college campus. They captured seven of the birds, tagged them, then let them go. And they did it all while wearing creepy skin masks...they were testing whether the crows could recognize human faces or not. It turns out they can. To a frightening degree: Whenever the scientists walked around campus with the masks on, the crows would "scold" and dive-bomb them... because along with the ability to recognize us as individuals, the researchers also learned that crows can hold a grudge. And pretty soon, it wasn't just the first seven crows reacting. Other birds, ones that hadn't even been captured in the first place, started dive-bombing the scientists as well...The test was repeated with multiple people wearing multiple masks, and without fail, the crows left the masked men who hadn't messed with them alone, but went murder-crazy on the mask that had been worn while messing with them...Researchers believe that the ability to recognize humans is an extension of the crows's ability to recognize each other, which helps them to warn one other about potential predators." I find it pretty remarkable that I can barely remember everyone's face at school but crows remember every face they've seen.

The article also says "One early test of tool use and intelligence in crows had researchers tying a piece of meat to a string, and then tying that string to a stick. To a one, the crows all stood on the stick, grabbed the string, dragged it up, held it with their foot, and repeated the action until they could reach the meat. We know people right now that would fail that test (some of them are us)...In the study, rooks were placed in a room containing a small pile of pebbles, then given a worm in a tube with water. And, because all good science is based on dickotry, they made sure the worm floated just out of the crow's reach. Two of the birds took two attempts to figure out the trick, and the other two got it on the first try. Here's the really mind-blowing part: The birds didn't just figure out a crude behavior through trial and error; they dropped in stones only until the water was high enough to reach the worm, and went for the larger pebbles too, understanding that they would displace more water." I find it so amazing that they have problem solving skills like people. The only difference is that people inquire them and crows already have them. They are like little genius.I didn't put all 6 ways of the article, I thought you could check it out and be interested like I was. Here's the link: http://www.cracked.com/article_19042_6-terrifying-ways-crows-are-way-smarter-than-you-think_p2.html

Actually taking the time and learning about crows made me think of other things I have misunderstood. Actually seeing something people called "pests" and realizing that they are beautiful creatures just with misunderstood intentions.Makes me feel like I need to reanalyze everything I seen as a pest and look deeper to find the true nature of it.

Without the Moon

During my observations this week I questioned what would happen if the moon vanished. According to Larry O' Halon's article "What if the Moon Disappeared," he says "... there would be none of its mass left to tug gravitationally on the earth. One of the effects would be that we could throw out tide tables for good...The greatest concern would be in the long term, regarding the Earth's wobbling spin axis... the wobble causes truth north to not always point at polaris... Earth might wobble so much thath seasons would become inhospitably extreme and Earth would be much less stable and inhabitable planet." People don't realize how much the Earth needs the moon. Before this project I was one of those people that really didn't notice the impact the moon had. Each day that I do this project I learn more and more. I realize its necessity and relationship with not only the earth but us as humans. With everything I learned I appreciate it's beauty and power.

Home is Where the Moon is

When I was a little we used to drive around lot with my family. I would always look up and see the moon following along and I would asked my mom "Why does the moon follow us? Are we special?" My mom wouldn't answer my question but would laugh. As I got older I learned that it was just an optical illusion but either way I like to feel like no matter where I go the moon is right behind me.
As I move out of my home once again the only thing that brings me comfort is knowing that the moon will follow.

Smoke and the Moon Don't Mix

Heavy smoke and the moon don't mix well! The day I started observing the moon is when the smoke barely started so I really haven't seen the moon. I am not completely sure if the smoke is the reason I can't see the moon. There is a possibility it could be the season or location.  Not knowing where the moon is freaks me out a bit. Am I the only one?

Despite that, I did enjoy the look and feel around me. Like, the smell of pine trees, the cool breeze, the leaves falling from trees (trees going from green to yellow), and the stars. Before this project I never really look up at the sky especially not for long periods. I never really noticed the stars or how some stars shine brighter than others.

So far I have really enjoyed this project despite yet having not seen the moon.
